As Greg Sargent pointed out yesterday (emphasis mine), “every expert from economists to the White House to Moody’s say that allowing the government to default on the debt would be nightmarish. Except Republicans and Tea Party Republicans.[….] Fully 65% of Republicans and Republican leaning independents who agree with the Tea Party see no major problems if this occurs, compared with 45% of Republicans and Republican leaners who do not agree with the Tea Party.”
Despite the warnings from the experts, Republicans continue to play politics with the debt ceiling.
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, made this outrageous statement on a California radio show yesterday:
“We should not be having a discussion with a artificial deadline of August 2nd, set by the President so the President can extort a deal through his reelection period. That’s not right, it’s not what the American people expect us to do.”
