Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) on Republican threats to allow the U.S. to default on our debts unless Democrats agree to deep cuts in Medicare (from an interview with Greg Sargent), emphasis mine:
“Democrats [House Democrats] will not support cuts in benefits — that’s a non-starter. Medicare is a safety net that seniors have earned. These people did not cause the situation that we’re in. For us to be talking about continuing tax cuts for the rich and taking benefits away from senior citizens — that is just unbecoming of a civilized society.”
Republicans have made it more than clear that they really don't give a damn about having a "civilized society", so uncertainty over the future of Medicare, Medicaid, and the debt ceiling is the rule of the day.
