President Obama nominated Professor Diamond in April for a Fed board position, where he would serve under his former student, Ben S. Bernanke, the Fed chairman. But in August, under an obscure procedural rule, the Senate sent Mr. Diamond’s nomination back to the White House before starting its summer recess, and a senator questioned his experience.
In August, Senator Richard C. Shelby, Republican of Alabama, said Professor Diamond did not have enough experience for the position. The Web site CqPolitics.com quoted him as saying, “I do not believe that the current environment of uncertainty would benefit from policy decisions made by board members who are learning on the job.”
From 1987 through the current year, Sen. Shelby has introduced a Constitutional amendment which would require Congress to adhere to a balanced budget
On February 1, 2011, I introduced a Constitutional amendment requiring Congress to balance our nation’s budget. I have introduced this legislation in every Congress since 1987 and will continue to fight for its enactment. A balanced budget amendment to the Constitution is the only certain mechanism that will break the cycle of deficit spending and finally put our nation on a path to paying off our national debt.
Recently, Sen. Shelby published a statement in which he states that “Washington must put its fiscal house in order.”
